5 Things To Know Before Your First Aerial Class

When we discover the world of aerial arts, it feels like an awakening. To immerse yourself in an art form that’s so thrilling and beautiful is an exciting adventure with rewarding challenges. Congratulations on taking your first steps to fly!

Aerial Arts will literally take you to new heights as you practice this compelling fusion of dance and acrobatics, suspended in the air. Here, we have compiled 5 things you should know before your first day of class!

The expert in anything was once a beginner.

Everyone starts as a beginner

Maybe you’ve been inspired by watching a performance or by a friend who started taking classes and now posts amazing photos on social media. But believe it or not, every aerialist starts out as an absolute beginner. Even your strong, fearless, superstar instructors once had to work very hard for their straddles!

When you join us at Fantasy Fitness and Dance, you will attend your first session in a brand-new Beginners Level class. With you in class will be other brand-new, Beginners Level classmates. We designed our program this way so that it’s the first day for everyone, and we can all begin together comfortably on the same page.

Be patient

The world of Aerial Arts is vast, and it can be tempting to want to master everything at once. Remember to be patient with yourself and your new way of moving. Mastery takes time, so resist the urge to compare your progress with some of our performance-level students that have trained for 6 years and more… and are still learning!

Your Aerial journey is unique to you, and when you want to step up your game, consider a Conditioning Class or drop in to Practice Time to accelerate your progress.

Choose a safe studio

A good studio will always put safety first. As a new student, you may benefit from watching out for a few studio red flags.

Very inexpensive classes can potentially signal a lack of “safety culture” at the school. Also avoid overcrowded classes that only offer shared apparatuses. You will have much less time on the equipment to strengthen your body, and your muscles can cool down quickly between turns. This increases your risk of injury.

At Fantasy Fitness and Dance, we offer our students a guarantee: one apparatus per student per course. This gives you plenty of time to hone those skills, stay warm, and stay safe!

Listen to your Instructor

Aerial Arts can foster lifelong friendships, but during class, be sure to pay close attention to your teacher. They are there to help you stay safe and assist with your growth along your Aerial journey. Their instruction is key to building a solid foundation from which to fly. Ask questions if you are unclear on a certain point. There are no silly questions!

Celebrate all achievements!

You’ll find that the Aerial Arts community can be incredibly warm and supportive, and participation is key. When your classmate passes an Aerial milestone, be sure to cheer them on! Next time you reach a new goal or trick, they will cheer you on as well!

Welcome to the world of Aerial Arts! You will make friends and achievements and grow along the way. We can’t wait to see you at Fantasy Fitness and Dance!
